The designating of the Fireman of the Year award as the Charlie Ennals Fire Fighter of the Year award was a parting gift to Charlie Ennals who served as a valued member of the Cowichan Bay Volunteer Fire Department for over 12 years between 1979 and 1992.

Charlie was our Radio Operator and Secretary of the Fire Department during his years of service and made a very significant contribution to the Cowichan Bay Fire Hall. Charlie also once owned the Land that the current Fire hall Stands on, and even after selling the farm, kept a small piece of land to build a retirement home on… directly behind the fire hall!

Charlie was first and foremost a gentleman, but was also a mentor to many members of the Fire Department. Charlie set the standards and expectations in the Fire Hall with respect to how he felt our volunteer fire fighters should conduct themselves. He exemplified the attitudes of dedication, leadership, commitment and participation. He taught young members to have respect for themselves, for other members of the fire hall family and for the Fire Department and all it stands for.

The award will be given annually to an active member of the Cowichan Bay Volunteer Fire Rescue. Members should consider the following when nominating a recipient for the award:

  • Someone who has made a significant contribution to the good of the Fire Hall during the year.
  • Someone who actively supports all aspects of the Fire Department whether it be training, fire prevention, duty crews, leadership on the fire ground or some other aspect of the operational side of our organization.
  • Someone who pitches in to make the Fire Hall a better and safer place and who has given unselfishly of themselves to teach others.
  • Someone who leads by example to show pride in the Fire Department and who puts the Fire Departments best interest ahead of their own.
  • Someone who is a team player and is respected by the membership.
  • Someone who presents the best image of the Cowichan Bay Volunteer Fire Rescue to their fellow Fire Fighters, the Fire Hall Family and to the Community as a whole.
